Inte= restingly, we owe it all to woman. Sound familiar? They say, 'the hand that= rocks the cradle rules the world!' In this case those hands have certainly= rocked Father's Day. So how did Father's Day start?[http://origin.ih.constantcontact.com/fs007/1= 101938345415/img/382.jpg?a=3D1102218518941] Some scholars opine that Father's Day history is much older than we actuall= y believe it to be. They say that the custom of honouring dad's on a specia= l day is over 4,000 years old. Scholars believe that the origin of Father's= Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they clai= m that the tradition of Father's Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon.= They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father's Day me= ssage on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his = Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of= what happened to Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Fa= ther's Day remains in several countries all over the world. The modern version of Father's Day celebrations originated in United States= of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the wor= ld. The world owes thanks to Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter fro= m Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father's Day sa= w the light of the day. The idea of a Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora's mind when she= per chance listened to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the= age 27, Sonora pondered that if there is a day to honour mothers then why = not fathers? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she = received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran.= Sonora's mother died in childbirth when Sonora was just 16. Mr Smart raise= d the newborn and five other children with love and care. Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, Ms Dodd bega= n a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spokane Minister= ial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supp= orted Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day= on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained grad= ual popularity all over US and Father's Day came to be celebrated in cities= across the country. Looking at the heightened popularity of Father's Day in US, President Woodr= ow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supp= orted the idea of a national Father's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intim= ate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon father= s the full measure of their obligations". After a protracted struggle of ov= er four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamatio= n declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in USA in 1966. Then i= n 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance= of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd = was honoured for her contribution at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. M= rs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96. Interestingly women make up 60% of Movember= web traffic and 60% of those who donate funds, in order to help save the m= en. Long live the Mo Sistas! Then on beginnin= g to write it I realised I might have too hastily accepted. Why? Simply put, I, like many of those I know am an every second weekend da= d. I am fortunate this year that my weekend with my son falls on Fathers Da= y Many of those I know won't be as fortunate. If it's not their weekend the= n they don't get to see their children. Many people say to me, "Your children are so lucky to have a father like yo= u." Are they? How does being an every second weekend dad impact on my chil= dren? I feel totally disenfranchised as a father in today's society. I fin= d it difficult to be just dad. As an every second weekend dad I have lost that connect-ability. I can do m= y best to be the dad I think my son needs but I have to say it is difficult= when I only see him for a short period of time. And sometimes I miss; some= times I just don't get it right. He, as much as I, struggles with the space= in between each visit and I can see as he gets older that the space is gro= wing. Whose fault is that? Maybe no-one's, or maybe all of us own a piece. The sad reality is what divorce or separation does to our children. In his = book 'Twice Adopted' the author Michael Reagan (past President Ronald Reaga= n's son) describes poignantly how divorce hurts kids: 'Divorce is where two adults take everything that matters to a child - the = child's home, family, security, and sense of being loved and protected - an= d they smash it all up, leave it in ruins on the floor, then walk out and l= eave the child to clean up the mess. Why? Because we adults always look at things like divorce and remarriage th= rough adult eyes - through the eyes of our grown up selfishness. We never s= top and try and look at these issues through the eyes of the child. We're so busy arguing and bickering, so busy breaking crockery and marriage= vows, that we don't stop and think about the scared little child over in t= he corner whose entire world is being torn apart. Maybe if we would think a little more about that child and a little less ab= out ourselves, we wouldn't be so quick to pull the divorce trigger and shoo= t our wedding vows through the heart' We only have such a short period of time, a small window of opportunity to = connect with our children before they get to an age where they no longer wa= nt to connect with us. It is that window of opportunity of which many fathe= rs in today's society are being denied. Often for them Fathers Day is a day= to stay hidden under the covers of a doona, hoping the day will pass quick= ly and without the painful memory of lost and loved children. For many the harsh reality of not seeing or hearing from their children on = this one day of the year, in which you are supposed to celebrate 'Fatherhoo= d', is just too much to take. Some sit by the phone awaiting that elusive c= all from children they haven't seen or heard from in years. Others simply c= hoose to forget the day and make themselves busy doing anything but think a= bout it. For some it is a time to wish their own dad a happy father's day. I could quote you all the statistics and studies that will tell you of the = importance of a father's role model in children's lives but until we stop w= aging wars beyond the court rooms in denying our children the right to a re= lationship with both parents, then what is the point? On this mornings news it was broadcast across Australia and the world of a = small whale that had snuggled up to a boat because it had lost its mum. The= flood of calls and offers of support or help were unbelievable according t= o reports. "The country is distressed over this," one reporter added. Well on this day, Fathers Day 2008. Next Sunday, 7th Se= ptember we celebrate Fathers Day 2008 in Australia. Intere= stingly, we owe it all to woman. Sound familiar? They say, 'the hand that r= ocks the cradle rules the world!' In this case those hands have certainly r= ocked Father's Day.
 
So how did Father's Day start?3D"Boy
 
Some scholars opi= ne that Father's Day history is much older than we actually believe it to b= e. They say that the custom of honouring dad's on a special day is over 4,0= 00 years old. Scholars believe that the origin of Father's Day is not a lat= est phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradit= ion of Father's Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have record= ed that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father's Day message on a card m= ade out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father= good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to= Elmesu and his father but the tradition of celebrating Father's Day remain= s in several countries all over the world.

The modern version o= f Father's Day celebrations originated in United States of America and ther= eafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes t= hanks to Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washingto= n as it is because of her struggle that Father's Day saw the light of the d= ay.

The idea of a Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora= 's mind when she per chance listened to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Fair= ly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered that if there is a day to honour m= others then why not fathers? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of th= e affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Ci= vil War veteran. Sonora's mother died in childbirth when Sonora was just 16= . Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care. <= br />
Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, M= s Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spoka= ne Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association = (YMCA) supported Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first F= ather's Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea = gained gradual popularity all over US and Father's Day came to be celebrate= d in cities across the country.

Looking at the heightened popul= arity of Father's Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea= in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Fa= ther's Day in 1924 to, "establish more intimate relations between fathers a= nd their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obl= igations". After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lynd= on Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of= June as Father's Day in USA in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon= established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on = the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honoured for her contributi= on at the World's Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96= .

This week I listened to Luke Slattery give a presentatio= n on the amazing development of Movember. Interestingly women make up 60% o= f Movember web traffic and 60% of those who donate funds, in order to help = save the men. Long live the Mo Sistas!
 
Women are the backb= one of the father and men's movement. Women such as Dr Elizabeth Celi, Bett= ina Arndt, Maggie Hamilton, Barbara Wellesley, Sue Price, Fae Stacy, Cheryl= King, Dr Natalie Gately, Dr Pamela Henry, Mary-Louise Fowler, Di Underwood= and many others too numerous to mention. Just make sure you add the many w= omen who inspire you or keep you going. Where would we be without them?

When I was asked to write an = article to emphasise the important role of fathers as role models for their= children I eagerly accepted. Then on beginning to write it I realised I mi= ght have too hastily accepted.
 
Why? Simply put, I, like ma= ny of those I know am an every second weekend dad. I am fortunate this year= that my weekend with my son falls on Fathers Day Many of those I know won'= t be as fortunate. If it's not their weekend then they don't get to see the= ir children.
 
Many people say to me, "Your children are so = lucky to have a father like you."  Are they? How does being an every s= econd weekend dad impact on my children?  I feel totally disenfranchis= ed as a father in today's society. I find it difficult to be just dad.
 
As an every second weekend dad I have lost that connect-abilit= y. I can do my best to be the dad I think my son needs but I have to say it= is difficult when I only see him for a short period of time. And sometimes= I miss; sometimes I just don't get it right. He, as much as I, struggles w= ith the space in between each visit and I can see as he gets older that the= space is growing. Whose fault is that? Maybe no-one's, or maybe all of us = own a piece.
 
The sad reality is what divorce or separation= does to our children. In his book 'Twice Adopted' the author Michael Reaga= n (past President Ronald Reagan's son) describes poignantly how divorce hur= ts kids:
 
'Divorce is where two adults take everything that= matters to a child - the child's home, family, security, and sense of bein= g loved and protected - and they smash it all up, leave it in ruins on the = floor, then walk out and leave the child to clean up the mess.
 =
Why? Because we adults always look at things like divorce and remarri= age through adult eyes - through the eyes of our grown up selfishness. We n= ever stop and try and look at these issues through the eyes of the child. 
We're so busy arguing and bickering, so busy breaking crock= ery and marriage vows, that we don't stop and think about the scared little= child over in the corner whose entire world is being torn apart.
&nbs= p;
Maybe if we would think a little more about that child and a little= less about ourselves, we wouldn't be so quick to pull the divorce trigger = and shoot our wedding vows through the heart'
 
We only have= such a short period of time, a small window of opportunity to connect with= our children before they get to an age where they no longer want to connec= t with us. It is that window of opportunity of which many fathers in today'= s society are being denied. Often for them Fathers Day is a day to stay hid= den under the covers of a doona, hoping the day will pass quickly and witho= ut the painful memory of lost and loved children.
 
For many= the harsh reality of not seeing or hearing from their children on this one= day of the year, in which you are supposed to celebrate 'Fatherhood', is j= ust too much to take. Some sit by the phone awaiting that elusive call from= children they haven't seen or heard from in years. Others simply choose to= forget the day and make themselves busy doing anything but think about it.= For some it is a time to wish their own dad a happy father's day.

I could quote you all the statistics and studies that will tell yo= u of the importance of a father's role model in children's lives but until = we stop waging wars beyond the court rooms in denying our children the righ= t to a relationship with both parents, then what is the point?
 <= br />On this mornings news it was broadcast across Australia and the world = of a small whale that had snuggled up to a boat because it had lost its mum= . The flood of calls and offers of support or help were unbelievable accord= ing to reports. "The country is distressed over this," one reporter added.<= br /> 
Well on this day, Fathers Day 2008. There will be a little= boy or little girl standing at the front gate, waiting for a dad who may n= ot be allowed simply because it is not his weekend. The country should be d= istressed over this.
